The painting recorded daylight as it moved across the surface of ancient and hand-made Chinese pottery. It was painted at intervals over a three year period. The aesthetic and philosophical enquiry that are embedded in the deceptively simple objects, and to some extent the structure of the pottery, are carried through into the painting. The painted surface is made of many layers of oil, resins and wax on gesso. As the light altered the appearance of the pottery, details were added and almost erased creating a reductive palimpsest.
