I am fascinated by shapes and patterns found in the natural world. I take a lot of photographs of trees, and plants, often focussing on outlines against the light, or the shapes of leaves, as a starting point for my work. I tend to work only with images that affect me emotionally, or which seem to contain a “story” in some way. I am essentially exploring our feelings evoked in the face of nature. I am often attracted to photographs which show natural forms with a sense of fragility, or transient beauty, as something always changing.

Artist Statement

I am fascinated by shapes and patterns found in the natural world. I take a lot of photographs of trees, and plants, often focussing on outlines against the light, or the shapes of leaves, as a starting point for my work. I tend to work only with images that affect me emotionally, or which seem to contain a “story” in some way. I am essentially exploring our feelings evoked in the face of nature. I am often attracted to photographs which show natural forms with a sense of fragility, or transient beauty, as something always changing.

I have been working with the cyanotype medium for some time. Its unpredictability, unexpectedness and variability on different surfaces, and in conjunction with other mediums, suits my work, and mindset. It also reflects natural processes. I welcome the role of chance in my work, and the final outcome is often not planned as such. I cannot always predict how the compositions of the different layers will work with each other, and this makes the results exciting.
