Artist Statement

Andrew Jackson is an award-winning artist who engages with the challenges of representation and narration through the medium of photography.

His interventions focus on migration, memory and notions of urbanism; they speak to how the experiences of others impact both upon our systems of belief and our notions of self, but also to our connection to the physical spaces around us - and those who inhabit them.

Jackson was a recipient of the Autograph ABP 2018/Light Work International Photography Residency in Syracuse, New York, developing a major exhibition on the subject of the Jamaican diaspora and the universality of migration to open at the mac birmingham in May 2018. He also was awarded a travel grant from Arts Council England's Artist International Development fund, which enabled him to develop a work exploring language and identity within the spaces of Montreal.

A graduate of the MA Documentary program with distinction at Newport in Wales, he has since undertaken both self-initiated and commissioned works in the UK and abroad.

He co-founded and was co-director of Some Cities CIC, a community-oriented participatory photography company, between 2013 and 2018.

In 2018 was nominated for the Elliot Erwitt Fellowship.

Works in development
The Promise of the City (working title): is a work about housing, specifically social housing in Birmingham and how that place which we call home, constructs our social identity - if only in the eyes of others.

Avec Moi: A return to a work started in 2005. The work explores the relationships that we have with the past, between ourselves and between those we photograph. The photograph and its changing context and meaning are explored in collaboration with the subject at the centre of the original photographs.
