Five2Watch: Empowerment

Inspired by our artist in the community, Diana Ali, we've selected five artists who have made work that resonates with themes of empowerment, featuring:  Julie McCalden, Stefhan Caddick, Morwenna Catt, Alex Wilde and Rob Miller

Girl Gang, 2011 - 2015

Julie McCalden

Girl Gang is posturing and swaggering. Girl Gang is daring and adventure.

Girl Gang sanctions the exploration of different modes of behaviour via a slight change in individual perception.

Gang members explore how a small shift in thought only can influence behaviour and free self-imposed constraints.

Through a series of dares and adventures, Girl Gang members equip themselves with new skills and stories, inducing jealousy and admiration in equal measures.

Girl Gang investigates a range strategies for moving through the social and built environment, delighting in taking up space and reinterpreting the lay of the land in order to gain economic freedom, mobility and social space.

 Ghost Parade, 2012

Stefhan Caddick

Ghost Parade was a large scale, collaborative event commissioned for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The event involved outdoor projections, archival moving images and mass participation, with music provided by Ebbw Valley Brass. Part carnival, part surreal protest, Ghost Parade celebrated a decade of transition in Ebbw Vale. This collective endeavour took place 10 years, almost to the day, since the closure of the Steel Works, an occasion marked by the remaining workforce who staged a symbolic march out of the gates.

Beware for I am Fearless and therefore Powerful, 2016

Morwenna Catt

Handmade Textile Apron embroidered with text and image. The piece is a kind of 'double' apron...a traditional gathered apron beneath with a detachable Masonic style apron. "Beware for I am fearless and therefore powerful" is a quote from Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein". "Through storm to peace" is a quote from Annie Besant.
